Artist Statement
The Sway of Surroundings is an abstract journey through a year of life in the seasonally dynamic Alaskan Interior. I created this body of work to express my deeply felt connection with the sensations of the environment, the ways that they change over time, and how life adapts in response. It is my way of honoring how growing up surrounded by boreal wilderness has helped foster my imagination, and how this time has provided cathartic and reflective moments that I share with others through this artwork.
I translate the fleeting and visceral qualities of the natural world through my imagination to create colorful forms of place and time. I combine intuitive and technology-involved processes to set these elements into geometric compositions as a way of embodying the relationship between the artificial and natural in the context of life in the extreme conditions of Alaska. This imagery is open yet specific to my experiences, celebrating individual interpretation while cultivating community through sharing. With its cyclical immersion, The Sway of Surroundings offers an opportunity to personally and collectively consider the complex dimensionality of place alongside the reciprocal relationship of influence between environment and experience.
